Sapphire - Radeon HD4870 X2 Review

When ATI launched the HD4870 graphics card, it surprised many with its blend of near high-end performance with mainstream prices. One of the most surprised seemed to be arch enemy Nvidia, which promptly started chopping prices to try to compete on the bang-for-buck front.

So if one HD4870 is good, imagine how good two HD4870 cores on the same PCB might be. Welcome to the R700 - or, to you and me, the Radeon HD4870 X2.

From the outside the only apparent difference between the new HD4870 X2 and the previous HD3870 X2 is the pair of updated RV770 cores and faster GDDR5 memory, but under the skin there is a whole world of difference.

The HD4870 has the second generation PCI-E 2.0 x16 switch (PLX) as opposed to the PCI-E 1.1 of the previous generation X2, giving the HD4870 a much wider communication channel than before; twice as big, in fact, at 5GB/s (in each direction).

This helps in the rendering of modern games, as these need data transfers between each GPU when more than one core is used. In addition to this fast, wide interconnect, the HD4870 X2 also supports SidePort which enables the cores to use an additional 5GB/s bi-directional bandwidth, but seeing as though no software currently available takes advantage of this, it has been disabled. This all adds up to a theoretical internal bandwidth of a colossal 21.8GB/s, eliminating any potential bottlenecks.

Although the HD4780 X2 comes with 2GB of GDDR5 memory, dual GPU cards don't share a frame buffer which means in this case that each RV770 core has 1GB of GDDR5 to play with. The memory may only go through a seemingly mean 256-bit memory bus, but the sheer speed of GDDR5 (in this case 3,600MHz) more than makes up for it. Each core is clocked at 750MHz and the 800 shaders in each all run at the same speed as the core.

Surprisingly, the HD4870 X2 uses less power than two HD4870s in a Crossfire set up. The two-card set up will eat up to around 320W while the HD4870 X2 makes do with 'just' 286W. As with the single card it uses single 6-pin and 8-pin PCI-E power connectors.

Sapphire's board is pretty much a reference design in red and black but with the company's own attractive gunslinger sticker on the dual-slot cooler. This cooler doesn't use heatpipe technology to aid in the cooling process, relying instead on two hefty copper heatsinks, one on each GPU.

The card uses the same fan as found on the single core model and our review sample had a strange habit of spinning the fan up to full speed for a split second for no apparent reason, sometimes while being benched, sometimes just while in idle mode.

So what about performance, I hear you ask? Well, it's pretty - no, make that very - impressive, especially as you might expect at higher resolutions when all that bandwidth makes its presence felt.

Testing it with 3DMark06 at a resolution of 1,280 x 1,024 it produced a score of 16,400, compared to the 13,980 of a single HD4870 and 14,102 of an Nvidia GTX280. But of course with all that available bandwidth the real grunt of the HD4870 X2 comes into play at higher resolutions. At 1,920 by 1,200 the X2 gives a score of 15,890 compared to the 12,758 of the HD4870 and 13,400 of the GTX280. It's a similar story in the more intensive 3DMark Vantage: the X2 produced a score of 12,530 in the Performance test as compared to the 8,360 of the HD4870 and 10,103 of the GTX280.

It's the same story again when tested using real games: at high resolutions and with plenty of filtering added, the HD4870 X2 is out on its own. In World in Conflict at a resolution of 2,560 by 1,600 with 4x AA and 16x AF, the average frame rate produced by the HD4870 X2 was 45fps while the single core HD4870 and GTX280 could only manage 26fps and 33fps respectively.

If you want to test your own setup, Sapphire now bundles 3DMark Vantage in with the card instead of the previous 3DMark06. Along with it you get CyberLink's DVD Suite and PowerDVD and the latest version of the Ruby Rom. The hardware bundle consists of two power adaptors (one 4-pin Molex to 6-pin PCI-E and one 4-pin Molex to 8-pin PCI-E), a single CrossFire bridge, S-Video to RCA adaptor, Component out dongle, DVI-VGA adaptor and a DVI-HDMI adaptor.
Sapphire - Radeon HD4870 X2 features - Verdict

While Nvidia may still hold the crown for the fastest single core card in the GTX280, the Radeon HD4870 X2 shows that ATI is interested at getting back the overall performance crown, and in most respects has succeeded with the new card. All this at a price point that isn't too outrageous compared to the price that some GTX280s are going for.

SteelSeries Limited Edition series for Sudden Attack game

If you’re into gaming even remotely, then you’ve probably not only heard of SteelSeries, but actually drooled over a few of their devices just a little bit. It’s alright, you can admit it here. Well for this Christmas season SteelSeries has announced that they’ll be releasing a limited edition version of the Ikari laser gaming mouse as well as the QcK mouse pad.

Alright, so a mouse pad isn’t exactly something to get overly excited over. However, it’s always nice to manage to get your hands on a limited edition set. It wasn’t actually released for the Christmas season, but actually to celebrate the Sudden Attack video game. The mouse pad features artwork from the game. The mouse is going for $79.99 and the mouse pad for a much cheaper $11.99.

Gamespot.com

GameSpot is a video gaming website that provides news, reviews, previews, downloads, and other information. The site was launched in May 1996 by Pete Deemer, Vince Broady and Jon Epstein. It was purchased by ZDNet, a brand which was later purchased by CNET Networks. CBS Interactive, which purchased CNET Networks in 2008, is the
current owner of GameSpot. GameSpot.com is currently one of the 200 highest-trafficked websites according to Alexa

In addition to the information produced by GameSpot staff, the site also allows users to write their own reviews, blogs, and post on the site's forums. The forums are partially shared with those on GameFAQs, another website owned by CNET.

In 2004, GameSpot won "Best Gaming Website" as chosen by the viewers in Spike TV's second Video Game Award Show and has won Webby Awards for several years. Other gaming websites such as IGN, 1UP.com, and GameSpy have been its biggest rivals. The domain gamespot.com attracted at least 60 million visitors annually by 2008 according to a Compete.com study.
GameSpot's main page has links to the latest news, reviews, previews, and portals for the following current platforms: Wii, Nintendo DS, PC, Xbox 360, PSP, PS2, and PS3. It also includes a list of the most popular games on the site and a search engine for users to track down games of interest. GameSpot also covers the following platforms to a lesser extent: Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Xbox, PlayStation, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, Neo Geo Pocket Color, N-Gage, and mobile games, among others.

#2. IGN.com

IGN (an abbreviation for the former Imagine Games Network) is a multimedia news and reviews website that focuses heavily on video games. Its corporate parent is IGN Entertainment, which owns and controls separate sites such as GameSpy, GameStats, Rotten Tomatoes and AskMen. IGN's main website comprises several specialty sites, or "channels", each occupying a subdomain on IGN and covering a specific area of entertainment. Game-related channels include PC Games, Wii, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PSP, Xbox Live, Wireless, Retro, and iPhone games. In addition, IGN has channels covering movies, music, gear and technology, sports, comic books, television and more. Founded in September 1996 as Imagine Games Network, IGN began as five individual websites within Imagine Pu
blishing: N64.com (later renamed IGN64.com), PSXPower, Saturnworld, Next-Generation.com and Ultra Game Players Online. In 1998, the network consolidated the individual sites as system "channels" under the IGN brand. Next-Generation and Ultra Game Players Online were not part of this consolidation; UGPO dissolved with the cancellation of the magazine, and Next-Generation was put "on hold" when Imagine decided to concentrate on launching the short-lived Daily Radar brand. Then-parent company Snowball.com held an IPO in 2000, which subsequently bombed with the dot-com bomb. As of June 2005, IGN claimed 24 million unique visitors a month, with 4.8 million registered users through all department s of the site. IGN is ranked among the top 200 most-visited websites according to Alexa. In September 2005, IGN was acquired by Rupert Murdoch's multi-media business empire, News Corporation.

GameFAQS.com

Game FAQs is a website that hosts FAQs and walkthroughs for video games. It was created in November 1995 by Jeff "CJayC" Veasey and was bought by CNET Networks in May 2003. It is currently owned by CBS Interactive. The site has a database of video game information, cheat codes, reviews, game saves, and screenshots, almost all of which is submitted by volunteer contributors. The systems covered include the 8-bit Atari platform through modern consoles, as well as computer games. Submissions made to the site are reviewed by the site's current editor, Allen "SBAllen" Tyner.

GameFAQs hosts an active message board community, which has a separate discussion board for each game in the site's database, along with a variety of other boards. Since 2004, most of the game-specific boards have been shared between GameFAQs and GameSpot, another CNET/CBS website. The site also runs a daily opinion poll and tournament contests.

GameFAQs has been positively reviewed by The Guardian and Entertainment Weekly. As of 2009, GameFAQs.com is one of the 300 highest-trafficked English-language websites according to Alexa.

GameFAQs was started as the Video Game FAQ Archive on November 5, 1995,by Jeff Veasey, who says he wanted to collect the numerous online guides and FAQs into one centralized location.Hosted on America Online, it originally served as a mirror of Andy Eddy's FTP FAQ archive. The initial version of the site had approximately 10 pages and 100 FAQs.In 1996, the site moved to its current domain at gamefaqs.com and changed its name to GameFAQs.At this time, GameFAQs listed less than 1000 FAQs and guides and was updated on an irregular basis.

During the following months, the site grew in content and in design; two different styles were introduced in early 1997 to accommodate the support of tables in web browsers (or the lack thereof). Two key features of the site—the game search engine and the contributor recognition pages—were planned at this time.

PSP Firmware Update v6.10 incoming

Sony has announced that a new PSP firmware update version 6.10 will be released shortly. According to Eric Lempell, PlayStation Network Operations, this is a big update in preparation for the launch of PSP Go. All PSP Go owners are advised to download the update to ensure full compatibility with MediaGo and with all PSP titles.

Version 6.10 features:

* SensMe channels is a new music application for PSP that uses Sony’s proprietary 12 Tone Analysis technology to evaluate music tracks that have been imported from Media Go application on your PC to your PSP. The application automatically categorizes the tracks into 12 channels such as “Relax” or “Newly Added”. Check out the walk-thru demo to see how it works.
* In addition, PS Store for the PSP and PSPgo via Media Go (v1.2) will be updated with a new look on Thursday, October 1. To access PlayStation Store, you need to download Media Go (or update Media Go if you already have it). Media Go is a free PC software application that allows you to easily organize and transfer music, photos and videos between your PC and PSP. It also allows you to access PlayStation Store and to purchase, backup and restore PSP games. Of course, you can always access PlayStation Store directly on the PSP and PSPgo by connecting to a wireless hot spot and simply logging in with your PlayStation Network ID. But for those of you who prefer to use a PC, you will see that downloading games, movies and TV shows for your PSP is easier than ever with the new PlayStation Store on Media Go. With this update, you’ll be able to export playlist onto the PSP. Go to us.playstation.com/psn/mediago to download Media Go and for more details.
* Tethering. Another new feature is the ability to use a bluetooth mobile device, such as a mobile phone, as a modem to connect your PSP system to the internet. This means that when you’re not located close to a wifi spot you have another way to get on the internet via a bluetooth mobile device.

Louisville Slugger Baseball Bat for the Nintendo Wii

lsw

There are plenty of Wii games around that require you to swing, well for those baseball themed ones, now you can really swing something. This Louisville Slugger will give a far more realistic aspect to the game when you need to be swinging. Of course this also means among kids that there’s more likely to be some minor injuries. Then again, you don’t really have to buy something like this for the younger ones if you have them. You’re obviously a worthy recipient of such an accessory.

The bat is pretty self explanatory. You just pop in the remote and away it goes. Don’t worry, if you do happen to actually swing and connect with someone’s head, it won’t really hurt them. They might be a touch angry, but the bat is actually made out of foam. That foam will make it much more safe to use with kids around. It’s a pretty cheap addition to go in with your other Wii accessories. You can purchase it for $14.99 from Toys R Us.

Need an invite to lockerz?

I think some people might have heard of lockerz if not it is a site where you get prizes but you can only be invited by invitation. Its very simple you get 4 points a day by just logging in and answering the daily question so I think people will probably find it easier then prizerebel which is what my site is usually based on. But you really have nothing to lose because of how simple it is.

If you want an invitation, email me at smihat@aol.com or leave your email in the chat box and I will email you back with an invitation.

Here is a testimonial

Here is how the site works

1. What is Lockerz: Lockerz is an invitation-only website created to connect members through commerce, content and community. Watch exclusive video, discover new music, play games, connect with friends, and get rewarded for it. The more often you visit, the more opportunities you have to earn PTZ (or “Pointz”), Lockerz’ own form of currency. Lockerz was founded in March, 2009.

2. What types of products can be purchased at Lockerz: Members will be able to purchase a wide range of products from apparel, accessories, electronics, games, sports equipment and other products from hundreds of well known brands. Members will also be able to purchase digital assets such as music, videos, art, and decals.

3. Is Lockerz a scam: Lockerz is a real company. It is funded by Liberty Media, one of the largest media companies in the US. The Chief Executive Officer of Lockerz is Kathy Savitt, a former executive at Amazon.com and American Eagle Outfitters.

4. Why is Lockerz giving away prizes at low levels on PTZ Place: First, we just want to thank you for getting involved at the very beginning. You rock. Plus, you’re helping us build the coolest group of brand trendsetters every time you invite friends to Lockerz...but you probably knew that. And finally, we want you to try out the different PTZ levels to get a taste of how everything will work when we go live this fall. This version of the PTZ Place is a test for us to figure out what you like, what we like, and how together we can make Lockerz unbelievable when it officially launches.

5. Why is everything “Fresh Out” in PTZ Place: We are “fresh out” because the overwhelming early response to Lockerz blew right through our initial inventory. We will re-stock PTZ Place with new items starting this Friday, August 14.

6. Why aren’t people receiving invites: The overwhelming early response to Lockerz has occasionally maxed out our capacity to send email invitations. We are still in a beta learning phase. We are adding capacity every day. You should now be able to send and receive invites successfully. Invites that you already entered into the system should have been sent by now. You still may not be able to invite friends directly through Facebook. We are working really hard to fix that fast.

7. Will Lockerz ship internationally: Once Lockerz begins selling products this fall, we will ship to many countries outside the US (check back at launch time for a complete list).

8. When will I get my Z-List t-shirt: Please allow 7-10 days for delivery.

9. How many accounts can I have: Members are entitled to one account per person. Each person within a household can have their own account.

10. I want to play the game again, but can’t: The game is a one-time-only way to earn bonus PTZ when you first join Lockerz.

11. How will Lockerz make money: Starting this fall, you will be able to purchase products at Lockerz. But don’t worry, PTZ Place will still be around, with way more prizes and experiences than there are now. Members will be able to earn PTZ every time they buy, watch, play, share, invite friends, or simply show up on Lockerz. PTZ will be redeemable for both products and experiences.

12. When will Lockerz launch: Lockerz is launching in stages. PTZ Place, Lockerz’ Prize Redemption Center, is now live. Other components will be launched soon. The complete site will be launched this fall.

Nintendo

Times have been tough lately in Mario Land. After being stomped on by an oversized cartoon plumber for more than two years, Nintendo’s rivals are doing their best to shrink Super Mario back down to size. The Japanese entertainment company’s decision on Thursday to knock 20 per cent off the price of the Wii, its popular gaming console, came on the heels of price cuts for rival Sony’s PlayStation3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

Along with the prospect of being dragged into a price war, there is plenty else for investors to feel glum about. Sales of the Wii fell 20 per cent in the first half, NPD market research estimates, while Nintendo’s shares have lost a third since January. And, with both Microsoft andSony preparing to launch their own versions of the Wii’s innovative motion-sensitive controls, Nintendo’s advantage in casual gaming risks being competed away.

But hang on. A price cut was inevitable given the number of Wiis already sold. Until this week, its price had been unchanged since the 2006 launch – the longest streak in gaming history.

While sales have fallen sharply, with an installed base of more than 52m consoles and a likely boost to sales ahead of the holiday season, the Wii’s position atop the heap looks secure. Its closest rival is Microsoft, with just over 30m consoles.

Nintendo’s share price already reflects lower growth expectations, having fallen from a peak of about 50 times forward earnings in late 2007, when the Wii was flying off the shelves, to about 10 times today. Nintendo must be hoping that its experience will be something like Sony’s. Meanwhile, US sales of the PS3 jumped 300 per cent after prices dropped last month. That could power-up Nintendo with the extra life it needs.

Ugandan gorillas get friendly on Facebook

KAMPALA, Uganda: He's hairy, his table manners are atrocious, and he wants to be your friend on Facebook.

No, it's not the ex-boyfriend. It's Muhozi, an endangered Ugandan mountain gorilla, who's appearing online as part of a fundraising program the Ugandan Wildlife Authority is launching Saturday to help save the species.

Around 340 mountain gorillas — nearly half of the 740 remaining worldwide — live in Uganda's lush Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. The rest live in the Virunga mountain range, which stretches from Uganda into Rwanda and the war-ravaged Democratic Republic of Congo.

Despite their size — a male silverback can reach over 7 feet (2.1 meters) and weigh 400 pounds (180 kilogram) — the gorillas are threatened by poachers who kill them for meat, farmers and charcoal-burners who encroach on their habitat, and the indiscriminate bullets of rebels on the run. They must be protected by rangers with automatic rifles.

The Wildlife Authority is hoping that fans will befriend a gorilla on Facebook or MySpace or follow it on Twitter in return for a minimum donation of a dollar. The money will be used to hire extra rangers to protect the gorillas and safeguard their habitat.

In return, gorilla friends will receive regular updates about their chosen gorilla, be able to track their progress through global positioning systems, have their gorilla's picture on their home page and receive gorilla trivia — like the fact that the name is derived from a Greek word, gorillai, meaning 'hairy women.'

Wildlife Authority spokeswoman Lilian Nsubuga said she hoped the program would give people who could not afford to travel to Uganda themselves the chance to feel closer to the animals. About 10,500 tourists visit Uganda each year to see the gorillas. An entry permit for the park is $500 per person. Last year Uganda earned $600 million through tourism and over 90 percent of the money was from gorilla tourism.

"The (gorillas) are also very similar to human beings. That's what makes many people want to look at them," Nsubuga said.

Thomas Slater, the director of the gorilla website, said internet users would be able to befriend any individual from one of seven groups habituated to human contacts.

"You will be able to learn more concerning the particular gorilla, its character, family and relationships," he said.

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising

Dragon Rising

It has been a long time coming, but Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is almost with us and looks set to redefine the standards for tactical warfare titles and possibly break new ground for future titles to follow through on.

It has been a while since a title of this type really made an impact on the sales charts, you could say Rainbox Six Vegas 2 is the closest thing in recent times but even that, though a great title in it’s own right, doesn’t appear to match up to the potential of Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising.

OPERATION FLASHPOINT: DRAGON RISING TRAILER

The game boasts graphic as realistic as you could possibly expect from today’s gaming hardware and the frame-rates perform well even in the height of intense firefights, both long and close range. Despite some battle sequences being frantic, the majority of the game is spent playing at a slower, sometimes cautious pace and if you try to play any other way you will find yourself being taken out quite regularly.

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is all about tactical warfare and if you don’t stay one step ahead of the enemy then your mission is one of suicide! The events of the game focus around a bitter conflict between China and the United States after China invade an oil-rich island off the east coast of Russia called Skira. Skira isn’t the smallest island by any means, giving you 220 square kilometers of gorgeous gaming environment in which to do battle!

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is released on PC, XBox 360 and Playstation 3 on October 9th 2009.

Need for Speed Shift

Need for Speed Shift

The Need for Speed franchise is arguably considered the best arcade racing series around, but will whether the loyal fanbase will follow the imminent release of Need for Speed Shift - a distinctive realistic racing simulator - remains to be seen.

With previous games in the Need for Speed series concentrating on exagerated graphics and racing physics, the change of focus to a ’standard’ racing simulator with Need for Speed Shift may come as a surprise to fans of the series - but in most cases it promises to be a pleasant one.

NEED FOR SPEED SHIFT TRAILER

Need for Speed Shift boasts some of the best graphics seen in a racing title to date, and that includes comparisons to the likes of modern Project Gotham Racing, Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport releases. However the game truly stands alone when you consider the abundance of modes available to players and the variety offered in each of them.

The tracks and cars look and feel real, and each car handles slightly differently making every gamers experience of Need for Speed Shift that little bit different - there will be a perfect car in here for everybody though, with bucketloads to choose from including some hot official models from the likes of Audi, Ford, Nissan and Honda amongst others.

Earn points as you race and even as you practice which you can later spend on unlocking new content such as tracks, cars and additional garage slots for building on your own collection of vehicles. You even have your own driver profile which makes a note of your driving style in preparation for your online play, so you can match up against similar drivers to you in terms of style and ability.

Need for Speed Shift is due to be released on September 17th 2009 and will appear on PC, XBox 360, Playstation 3 and PSP. The sales figures will ultimately decide the fate of this particular spin-off, and only time will tell if we can expect a Need for Speed Shift 2!

Sony targets spring for release of PS3 motion control

Sony has been quite busy of late. The company has announced it will release a motion control device for the PlayStation 3 in spring of 2010.

The controller will work in tandem with the PlayStation Eye to track a user's facial and body movements as well as their voice, Sony says. The device will also support a vibration feature similar to the PS3's DualShock controller.

The device houses "two motion sensors, three axes gyroscope and three axes accelerometer that can detect the controller's angle and movement," states the release. The bulb on top of the controller will change colors to give users visual feedback.

Sony has also revealed a few of the titles that will be compatible with motion controls, including Ape Escape and a sequel to echochrome. Current games such as Flower, PAIN and EyePet will incorporate motion control through a network update.

But perhaps the biggest game to add motion control will be Resident Evil 5, according to Joystiq. The game's producer demonstrated the controls during the Tokyo Game Show. This spring, a new version of the game, Resident Evil 5: Director's Cut, will add the motion control functionality. Joystiq also reports Sony used motion controls during a level of PS3 platformer LittleBigPlanet.

Sony has yet to reveal pricing details or an official name. Game Hunters will bring the latest news on this once it breaks.

Readers, looking forward to using motion control on the PS3 ?

Sony PSP Go

The PSP (PlayStation Portable) may have been overshadowed by the sheer volume of hype surrounding the iPhone, but Sony's latest portable gaming goodie, the PSP Go, could see that trend reversed when it launches early next month.

Form-factor-wise the PSP Go is significantly smaller and noticeably lighter than its PSP predecessors, and won't result in you hearing the sound of tearing fabric when you slide it into a pocket.

Downsizing however doesn't mean diminished gaming as the PSP Go's 3.8" TFT LCD screen slides up to reveal all the usual in-game PSP control suspects.

Sony's decision to ditch the optical UMD drive however plays a huge role in lightening the PSP Go's load by approximately 40 per cent. Where PSP titles were initially sold on petite and proprietary UMD discs, the PSP GO has 16GB of built-in flash memory (which can be bolstered by a Memory Stick Micro) slot for storing games and other media.

In addition to helping the PSP Go with its Jenny Craig weight-loss feat, dumping the UMD should see battery life theoretically improved too. About the only downside with that the lack of UMD support is that UMD titles you already own are destined to gather dust for the rest of their pointless lives.

The overall control layout on the PSP Go has changed little from the original PSP 1000, with a four-way directional pad available on the left and the usual Sony control buttons (with the triangle, circle square and cross) on the right.

Rounding things out are the select/start buttons in the centre, and an analogue control which is near the centre bottom of the PSP Go's screen. From a gaming perspective the Go feels very much like a fully-fledged PS3 controller in use, making prolonged bouts of gaming a significantly more comfortable proposition.

802.11b/g Wi-Fi support is also present, and allows for multiplayer mayhem, web surfing or connecting to the Sony online store to purchase and download games. New to the PSP Go is Bluetooth which allows gamers to pair up stereo Bluetooth headsets with the PSP Go. This also allows the Go to perform several other nifty tricks such as pairing up with a PS3 controller.

In terms of game titles, Sony has confirmed PSP Go versions of its big hitters (many of which were pre-installed as demos on the review PSP Go I was sent).

These included Metal Gear Solid Portable, Dissida Final Fantasy, Patapon, LocoRoco, Numblast, Resistance Retribution, Worms Open Warfare, Ridge Racer 2, God of War.

Other titles slated for the PSP Go in 2009 are rumoured to include Little Big Planet, Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier, MotorStorm Arctic Edge, and SOCOM Fire Team Bravo 3.
