Google's Open-Source Closure Tools Project
Google's open-source Closure Tools project, commenced Thursday, is an attempt to help developers in creating Web sites and Web applications. Google being a strong proponent of JavaScript based programming, intends to help with writing, debugging, and optimizing heavy-duty JavaScript by the program. The Closure Compiler, is first in the suite of software packages, it tends to boil down a JavaScript program to smaller codes to run faster. The compiler removes dead code, then rewrites and minimizes what's left so that it will run fast on browsers' JavaScript engines. Also, Closure Inspector, is an extension for Firefox's Firebug add-on designed to help programmers understand and debug the rewritten JavaScript program. Another add-on for the Google Page Speed extension lets programmers see how much the compiler helped.
The Closure Library, second in the list, is a collection of prebuilt JavaScript code that lets programmers handle relatively complicated technology. And last on the list, Closure Templates, extensive pre-written codes to ease creation of JavaScript and HTML user interfaces. They are components that can be composed to form user interface, instead of having to create one big template per page.
Google plans to make the compiler available as a Web application hosted on its Google App Engine service.

Ready for 3D flat-screen TVs?
CHIBA (Japan) - JAPAN'S big name electronic manufacturers are readying flat-screen TVs that can show high-definition movies and video games in 3D for launch next year.
At the country's biggest consumer electronics show that opened Tuesday just outside of Tokyo all the major makers displayed 3D prototypes. Sony Corp and Panasonic Corp said they would bring their first models to market next year.
The companies are plowing ahead even before there is much content available, with corporate spokesmen saying only that preparation is under way. Demonstrations at the exhibitions were mainly short clips of movies, nature scenes and sports.
IT to generate 5.8 million new jobs by 2013
IDC predicts that the IT industry will be an engine powering economies out of economic doldrums, creating more that 75,000 new businesses in the next four years and adding jobs at a rate of 3 percent annually.
“Countries that foster innovation and invest in infrastructure, education and skills development for their citizens will have a major competitive advantage in the global marketplace,” said Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer.
“In this fundamental economic reset, innovative technologies will play a vital role in driving productivity gains and enabling the creation of new local businesses and highly skilled jobs that fuel economic recovery and support sustainable economic growth.”
US software colossus Microsoft sponsored the IDC research into the impact of IT in 52 countries that represent 98 percent of the global IT spending.
“IT spending growth is a good sign as we come out of the recession,” Microsoft Corporate Affairs communications manager Scott Selby told AFP.
Employment growth in IT related jobs will be three times that of overall job growth in what Selby said is a “good driver of economic growth.”
While the world has been in the gripes of a recession, it has also been in the midst of a “technology renaissance” flush with advances in software, devices, and Internet-based services, according to IDC.
IDC expects IT spending in the countries studied to grow at slightly more than three percent annually, three times as fast as the gross domestic products between now and the year 2013.
In what is good news for software powerhouse Microsoft, spending on software is predicted to grow faster than overall IT spending, rising 4.8 percent annually.
“Software is a driving force behind this IT growth,” Selby said. “IT allows us to do more with less.”
New technologies are also ushering in a new “cloud computing” paradigm in which applications are provided online as services instead of as software bought and installed on home or office machines, according to IDC.
Money saved by using software as needed “in the cloud” instead of buying, maintaining, and updating applications will likely be devoted to bringing new products or services to market faster and cheaper, according to Selby.
IDC estimates that cloud services could add 800 billion dollars in net new business revenues between the end of 2009 and the end of 2013.
“Over the past 20 years, we’ve seen transformative power in how investments in IT innovations foster economic growth,” said Robert D. Atkinson, founder of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation in Washington, D.C.
“Continued innovation and investment in information technology will help jump-start recovery from the current recession and will significantly contribute to the growth of employment and new businesses.”
Emerging markets will reap the greatest economic gains from IT, according to Selby.
“Emerging markets are really going to take advantage of IT for years to come,” Selby said.
“One reason is they will be able to leapfrog and enjoy benefits of innovations like cloud computing much more quickly.”
Microsoft played up the prime role its software is playing in IT systems worldwide.

Warner, YouTube near deal for music videos
NEW YORK: Warner Music Group and YouTube are finalizing an agreement that would allow music videos from artists such as Madonna and Green Day to once again be featured on the popular web site, according to sources close to the deal. The deal, which one source described as imminent, would resolve a dispute over licensing rights that caused Warner Music to pull music videos by its artists from Google Inc's YouTube in December. YouTube and Warner, the third largest music company, declined comment on the deal, first reported by AdAge on Monday. A deal would mean that Warner Music's stable of artists would once again appear on the world's most popular video sharing site, joining those from EMI Music, Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group, all of which have renewed deals. Financial details are unclear; but Warner Music Chief Executive Edgar Bronfman has made known his desire to improve terms of his previous deal with YouTube. Like other industry executives, he faces a music market that has been stung by tumbling CD sales and slowing digital music growth. The deal would also open the door to a possible role for Warner in a new music video website called Vevo, which is backed by Universal and Sony and will be supported by YouTube's technology platform. At the moment, talks about Warner joining Vevo are still in "early stages" and could break down over a range of issues, one source said. The source declined to be named because of the sensitive nature of the discussions. Music industry insiders say that Web videos are catching up with radio and music television as one of the most important music discovery tools for fans. They say Vevo would create a more sophisticated way to experience music on the web, describing a site that would be the music industry's version of Hulu, the popular U.S.-based online TV service backed by NBC Universal, News Corp and Walt Disney Co. Former Universal Music digital chief Rio Caraeff was appointed as Vevo's top executive earlier this summer. The venture has held talks with major advertisers and deals with at least four big brand names are expected to be ready in time for its debut later this year. |
Things I Love ! About Google Chrome
My primary browser is NOT Chrome, but I keep it loaded for testing and as an option; you should always have options.
But Chrome is not one to be dismissed it’s got some power and speed. And while the browser doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of… say Firefox; it hasn’t crashed on me yet. And from that there are some things I like about the speedy browser.
So these are just some things I like about Chrome and as the wheel turns and Chrome actively supports plug-ins, I might be swayed a bit more easily.
Program Startup
From my perspective, Chrome loads a lot faster than Firefox. There’s times when benchmarks say they’re faster, but it’s not noticeable, but there’s a noticeable difference between Chrome and Firefox loading. So getting to where you want to go, faster, can be done with Chrome.
System Memory
It doesn’t use a lot of memory.
Chrome reports back like this in my task manager:
36mb [basically]
Firefox reports back to me like this:
74mb [basically]
Task Manager
I don’t know why no one thought of this earlier. This is an awesome feature and you truly get to see who is responsible for crashing your browser. There’s been countless times I’ve tried to go to websites where they just stall; you never find out why they didn’t load.
Well Chrome handles this differently. It just starts loading and displaying stuff as soon as it’s got some structure. All the processed are divvied out and if they don’t pull their load, they’re pointed out and shunned.
Web Graphics
The graphics in Chrome are rendered better in Chrome than in Firefox. I’ve seen plenty of examples where Firefox and Chrome have presented images clearer.
Skia seems to be the graphics engine Chrome uses.
Web Security
I like the thought that if I go to a website and get misdirected by some malicious code that the browser is going to be thrown for a loop using browser exploits [not saying Chrome is perfect], but the fact that each site and function is ’sandboxed’ in to it’s own process so that if there’s something bad trying to go on; it’s not going to affect other processes.
Sandbox operates at process-level granularity. Anything that needs to be sandboxed needs to live on a separate process. The minimal sandbox configuration has two processes: one that is a privileged controller known as the broker, and one or more sandboxed processes known as the target. Throughout the documentation and the code these two terms are used with that precise connotation. The sandbox is provided as a static library that must be linked to both the broker and the target executables.
Barebones and Simple
While Chrome doesn’t have all the plug-ins everyone wants, it does have a simple options menu. There’s really not that much to muck around with and the options seem to pretty straight forward. This means it’s ready for the average user and IT Administrator/Consultant guys should enjoy it as well.
Stable and Consistent
I haven’t had Chrome crash on me yet. I’ve had Firefox crashed on me several times and sometime Firefox has this cute little error message type response like, ‘..oops’. But when Firefox crashes on a page it takes the whole browser with it. With Chrome, it reports back this site has a problem and has an intelligent type recovery. So I really like this feature.
Program Updates
Ever since I’ve loaded Chrome, I’ve never seen it tell there’s an update or it’s downloading an update OR anything about an update; it just is. Chrome has always been current anytime I checked the version info. It’s just nice to not have to check back every few weeks and update, OR get the latest update, to see what’s new. It’s refreshing.
Stealth Browsing
It’s one of those things you ask yourself, ‘…why wasn’t this in there from the beginning?’; it’s a common function now, but Chrome was the first to offer it and now everyone has followed suit.
Concept Innovation
Chrome/GGoogle has been pushing the innovation thing a lot. They keep to be really trying to make things better and actively promoting new and better ways to do things. So when a program has this much support behind it it’s encouraging
So, while Chrome is not my browser of choice, it’s really nice to have in the background to play with and test with.

7 Useful Design Tips for Beginner Blogs
#1. Use a Clean and Simple Theme
The first thing you Do after you have started your blog is choose a theme. If your blog is hosted on WordPress or Blogger there are Plenty of themes to choose from. Just Google around for WordPress themes or blogger templates and you can get hundreds of Free themes that you can use in your blog. But before choosing a theme keep in mind that it should be simple and clean.
Do not use a theme with heavy graphics, eye catchy colors or Images. Sure they look ” fascinating ” but after some days they will start distracting your readers attention. If the reader is disturbed by your graphics or other design elements he wont stay in your blog to read your articles. Thus it is recommended to choose a clean and simple theme for your blog.
#2. Use White Background and Black text
How many blogs you have seen use a dark background ? Can you easily read the content or text on a Dark background ? Reading articles on blogs having a dark background can be really difficult at times and is not recommended.
Hence it is always advised to use White or a Light background and Dark or Black text.Users want to read your content and they do not visit your website to see the design skills you have.If you make things difficult for them they wont come back even the second time to read your articles.
#3. Keep the Main Attention on the Content Column
This one is no brainer and should be followed at all costs. You should keep the content column the main focus in your blog. The content column should be wide enough ( e.g 600px ).If you have a two column template keep the content column to the left and the sidebar in the right.
Also do keep in mind that the content should begin immediately after your templates header. SO start the content section as early as possible so that the user need not need to scrool all the way down to read your posts.
#4. Use Minimum Advertisements and Widgets
You should Avoid distractions at all costs. The most disturbing and distracting affair in a Blog is advertisements and widgets. So keep the advertisements to a minimum and if possible do not use them within your content.Using advertisements embedded within content makes it hard to read your article all together and readers may feel disturbed. Result : they will stay away from your blog and go elsewhere.
The same is true in case you are using too much of widgets in your sidebars.Using too many widgets will eventually slow down your blog and above all it takes the focus away from the main juice : your content.use widgets sparingly and use them only when you need them , not because it adds one more functionality in your blog.
#5. Use large Font size and Proper fonts
I have seen many blogs playing with their fonts every now and then and they think it looks “cool”.Believe me nothing can be more irritating than using obtrusive font styles. Choose between the standard fonts like : Arial,Verdana, georgia etc. and the size of your font should be more than 12 px (at least). Using low font sizes to save space is a crazy idea.It creates a very bad impression to your first time visitors.
#6. Avoid horizontal Scrollbars
Nobody will be interested if they have to use a horizontal scrolbar to read your articles and posts. You should take utmost care while designing your blog template so that there aren’t any horizontal scrolbars. The scrolbars may occur in differeent screen resolutions( e.g 800 X 600) which is unavoidable but in all other screen resolutions it is recomended to check and say No to scrolbars.
#7. Have a Unique Logo and favicon
The first thing that comes to a readers mind about any blog is its logo.A good logo creates a solid brand and makes your blog remembered in your readers minds and hearts. So create your own blog logo and make it unique. Don’t just use text to represent your blog’s name.
Similarly you should also try to create a favicon for your blog. A favicon is seen in the browser address bar , in RSS feeds and its again a style element that brings clarity and brand value in your blog.
Cool Wunderland - Amazing Miniature World
Cool pictures and videos of Wunderland, the largest miniature railroad in the world. Miniatur Wunderland, located in Hamburg. Just looking at the cool pictures and videos below of the Miniatur Wunderland, a $10 million, 9,600 square foot train set, you may mistake it for a living, breathing place! This is so cool!

Several places, in fact, including its native Hamburg, and America (complete with an Area 51), Scandinavia and Austria — all painstakingly recreated down to the major landmarks, working traffic and ships and, of course, trains. Soon there will even be an airport. It's all part of an expansion planned for 2014, that will see Miniatur Wunderland add 36,000 feet of track to the almost 30,000 feet already in place, as well as doubling the set's $10 million price tag.

It took 500,000 working hours to build, going from Norway, Denmark, and Sweden to North America, through Germany, Austria, and Switzerland—complete with the Grand Canyon, 20-foot tall Swiss mountains, and:
- 800 trains.
- Over 10,000 train cars in total, running several hundred kilometers every day.
- One train is 47.5 feet long.
- Over 170 computer controlled cars.
- More than 200,000 people (there's all kinds of things here, even a crime scene).
- Controlled by 40 computers.
- 200 cameras control the premises.
- Day and night lighting simulator.
- 300,000 computer-controlled LEDs

The Miniatur Wunderland has a pretty darn impressive list of numbers, from track length to the number of traffic signals. They are opening an airport this year, which has taken 2.5 years to build. If you are not impressed after watching the video, seriously, I don't know what will. Oh, wait, I know: This cool model even has a fully working model whorehouse, casinos, and a secret underground base.

The attention to detail is obsessive to say the least. All framed by the sweet poetry of stilted translation: “see wild animals/and other very shy herds/and above all you examine the life like it is real”.

The wunders also include thousands of model cars, hundreds of thousands of lights, and scenes recreated from busy harbors to red light districts to football matches to hauling a body out of a river, across countries including the US, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
